Family Fun in NYC for the Holidays

Note to readers: A portion of my stay was covered by this hotel. I was not otherwise compensated and my opinions remain my own.

I truly believe the best present you can give your family is the gift of time, and time together on a trip to somewhere spectacular, like New York City during the holidays, makes it all the more special.

New York Hudson River

Between the tree at Rockefeller Center and the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall, New York City just oozes holiday cheer to me.
If you want your family close to all of that action, you may want to check out some of the specials at The New Yorker Hotel.
The New Yorker is currently offering several Winter specials to entice you to visit—with rates as low as $199 a night, depending on when you visit.
I recently stayed a few nights at The New Yorker and enjoyed the ‘Tourist Delight Package’, which included tickets to the Empire State Building.

Ever since watching the movie, Sleepless in Seattle, the Empire State Building has symbolized romance to me.  It’s easy to see how this particular tourist package could have you falling in love, if not with another travel companion, at least with the beautiful city.  I used my tickets the first night of this trip to New York and could have stayed for hours, except it was really cold up that high and I was really hungry.  There’s also a ‘NYC Shopping Package’ that provides a gift certificate to Macy’s Department Store.  Yes, the same Macy’s that hosts the Thanksgiving Day Parade and the same store located on 34th Street where that movie about the famous miracle is set.

You can also find deals with a ‘Broadway Package’, ‘Business Premium’ and ‘Armed Forces Special’.

New York City at night

We haven’t even touched on New Year’s Eve and the famous ball drop in Time Square.

If you are lucky enough to make a trip with your family happen to the Big Apple for the holidays, these are some other options you can keep in mind:

  • Why not treat them to some culture with the Nutcracker Ballet in NYC? As a child, I danced in the Nutcracker Suite every single year.  Nothing would be more amazing than watching the best ballerinas perform it.
  • How about going ice skating in Rockefeller Center?  This would be one of those memories they’d never, ever forget, you know?  How many toys or gifts can you say that about each year?
You could say the same thing about a Broadway show (note the special rate above that can get you tickets to a show).

The New Yorker is going through several renovations in the next year, with grand plans for changes over the next five years, to bring it back to its glory days (include link to story on that here).  Meantime, its location is its best selling point, since it truly is in the heart of everything you’ll want to see in the city.
