June 18th – Bang a Drum – Get Into the Rhythm at Chattahoochee Nature Center

Chattahoochee Nature CenterWhen was the last time you caught yourself tapping out a rhythm? Humans are naturally inclined to create and enjoy music and rhythm. Many children move instinctively to rhythmic sounds (you might call it dance) sometime after their 9th month. Rhythm is found in our beating hearts, our foot falls, the cadence of our speech.

Rhythm engages our minds and bodies.  Musical education has been linked to a deeper understanding of mathematics and language. Music has the power to manipulate emotions and cause you to stomp your feet or remember a past experience. Moving to rhythm triggers the areas of the brain that are responsible for spatial relationships and kinesthesia.

Most importantly, rhythm is simply fun. You don’t need fancy equipment to play along or move.  As musician Billy Jonas says, “There’s instruments all around you. Find something made of wood, plastic, metal and get ready to bang along.”

You can get into the rhythm at the Chattahoochee Nature Center June 18 at 3pm. Grammy nominated music group, Sapien will be performing a diverse mix of native and world music and sharing stories.  Sapien is made up of amazing musicians whose worldwide performances and travels have introduced them to the stories and traditional music of peoples across the globe.

Later that evening, Sapien musician Snowbear will lead a drum circle and all drummers are invited. Bring your djembe, bongos, body and other rhythmic instrument and play along. The Drum Circle will begin at 6pm and all ages, experience levels and spectators welcome.

The Sapien performance at 3pm is included with general admission and CNC members are free. The Drum Circle is $5 for the general public and CNC members are free.

Make music in your life, your whole family will benefit physically and mentally.
